Traveling Steel Mill Labor Positions

Job Descriptions

Refractory Technician

Design, build, and maintain high-temperature equipment and structures using heat-resistant materials like minerals, ceramics, and brick. Work in steel or aluminum mills to ensure proper installation and maintenance of heating systems.

Requirements:

  • Journeyman-level experience required.
  • Previous work in steel or aluminum mills is a must.

Compensation:

  • $38/hour + overtime.
  • Earn up to $4,343/week with overtime and per diem.
  • Hotel and travel expenses fully covered.

Furnace Brick Mason

Perform maintenance and repairs on steel mill furnaces, including installing and replacing refractory brick. Operate saws, follow blueprints, and use remote overhead and pendant cranes to complete furnace work. Work with 30-35T ladles in high-heat environments.

Requirements:

  • Experience in steel mills, aluminum mills, or refractory work preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow prints.
  • Skilled in operating saws and crane systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols.

Compensation:

  • $30 – $35/hour + overtime.
  • Earn up to $4,000/week with overtime and per diem.
  • Hotel and travel expenses fully covered.

Refractory Bricklayer

Build, repair, and maintain high-temperature equipment and heating structures using heat-resistant materials such as minerals, ceramics, and brick. Work in steel or aluminum mills to ensure proper installation and maintenance of refractory systems.

Requirements:

  • Journeyman-level experience required.
  • Previous work in steel or aluminum mills is required.
  • Ability to work with high-temperature materials and follow precise installation procedures.

Compensation:

  • $38/hour + overtime.
  • Guaranteed 70 hours per week.
  • Earn up to $4,343/week or more with overtime and per diem.
  • Hotel and travel expenses fully covered.
  • Completion bonus available.

Journeyman Millwright

Install, maintain, and repair heavy industrial machinery in steel mills, aluminum mills, or other heavy manufacturing environments. Ensure proper alignment, assembly, and maintenance of mechanical systems to keep operations running efficiently.

Requirements:

  • Journeyman-level experience required.
  • Previous work in steel mills, aluminum mills, or heavy manufacturing preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals.
  • Skilled in diagnosing mechanical issues and performing necessary repairs.

Traveling Steel Mill Technicians

Skilled technical roles in steel mills, including PLC technicians, machinists, electricians, and wastewater treatment operators. Work with automation, electrical systems, precision machining, and industrial water treatment. High pay, per diem, and travel covered.

Job Descriptions

PLC Technician (Automation + Instrumentation)

Install, monitor, inspect, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic control systems in an industrial steel production facility. Perform maintenance on process equipment, AC/DC utilities, and substation components. Diagnose and resolve issues affecting EAF and LF performance, incoming power irregularities, and medium/high voltage equipment.

Requirements:

  • Journeyman-level experience required.
  • Experience in steel mills or heavy industrial settings preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot all aspects of medium/high voltage equipment.
  • Experience in an underground mine environment is a plus.

Compensation:

  • $32 – $38/hour + overtime.
  • Earn up to $4,000/week with per diem.

Manual Machinists

Set up and operate CNC and manual machining equipment to manufacture and repair steel mill components. Work with 4-axis vertical lathes, horizontal boring machines, gear hobbing and grinding machines, cylindrical grinders, radial arm drills, and coordinate measuring machines. Use standard machine tools and various hand, electric, and pneumatic tools to ensure precision machining.

Requirements:

  • Experience operating CNC and manual machining equipment in a steel or metals mill.
  • Ability to read blueprints and set up fixtures and parts for machining.
  • Skilled in using inspection tools to verify part quality.
  • Experience with de-burring and adjusting tools to maintain precision.

Machine Operator - Roll Grinder (Steel Mill)

Perform heavy assembly and precision regrinding of large rolling mill rolls in a steel mill environment. Operate roll grinding machines, use pendant and radio-controlled cranes for positioning, and ensure rolls are finished to precise specifications. Conduct equipment calibration, inspections, and maintenance to maintain optimal machine performance.

Requirements:

  • Experience in roll grinding within a steel or metals mill.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring tools (profilemeter, perthometer, micrometer, caliper) to check surface quality and shape.
  • Experience in rigging, brazing, cutting, welding, and fabricating structures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain roll grinding machines.

Journeyman High Voltage Electricians

  • Journeyman-level electrician license required.
  • Experience in steel mills, aluminum mills, or refractory environments required.
